In the 1880s, the Fort Myers, Florida area was known as a cow town. Today, it is known as the “City of Palms” and is a popular resort destination.
The Royal Palm Hotel was built in 1898, which helped Fort Myers become a winter resort. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford had made Fort Myers their winter retreat, and their estates are a great tourist attraction. Training camps for the Twins and Red Sox are held here each spring. The real treasure of this location is not revealed until after the sun goes down.
There are many activities and world class restaurants that make nightlife in Fort Myers an enjoyable experience. On Tuesdays from 7pm to 10pm, any coin will buy you any type of drink at Ricochet. If you fancy jazz, you need to stop by Ellington’s on Sanibel. It has a jazzed-up menu, featuring items such as herb-crested bass a la basie and a sweet brown chop. The Bridge Waterfront Restaurant is located on Fort Myers' Fisherman’s Wharf. Some of the other great restaurants and bars in the area are Harold’s Brick Bar, Skybar, Beached Whale, and Burke’s Irish Tavern.
Fort Myers also has lots of fine arts and cultural entertainment that begins in the evening. The Broadway Palm Dinner Theater has traditional musicals and a children’s theater with fairy tales. The food matches the ambiance of each show. You can enjoy music, dance and theater of every kind at the Arcade Theater. It is a Victorian style theater and is home of the Florida Repertory. You can also take a ride on the Seminole Gulf Railway’s Murder Mystery Dinner Train. If gambling is your idea of fun, there is a casino where you can see Broadway productions and concerts when you are not on the slots.
