One of the most beautiful and largest church in the world is St.
Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. The opulence of the church captures
the wealth of the catholic church in the 16th century. The Vatican has more history and artwork then most cities in the world. The doors leading inside the church are massive and ornate. St. Peter's
Basilica is a symbolic location because this is the spot where St. Peter
the chief apostle was buried. There is the Chapel of Pieta, a
well known sculpture of Mary holding Jesus, created by the artist
Michael Angelo. This is the first sculpture you'll see located on the
right hand side in the back of the church. The impressive dome was
also designed by Michael Angelo. His paintings on the dome are the best
I've ever seen, along with his paintings in the Sistine Chapel, which
is also located at the Vatican. There is the famous Papal Alter at St.
Peter's that is a Bernini masterpiece, where only the Pope is allowed
to say Mass. Underneath the alter is the tomb of St. Peter. There are
so many impressive sculptures, paintings, and mosaics that every where
you look is a place of beauty. This is one place I'd advise you to see
in your lifetime.
