The island has historical importance as it was home to the Minoan civilization and has important archeological finds at Knosos, Phaistos, and Gorty's. Thousands of tourists flock to these ancient sites. There are several small fishing villages where the people still live with customs and beliefs from the past to keep tradition alive.
